Enhancing roof ventilation at the Train Maintenance Centre.

About the Business.

Established in 1855, Sydney’s trains have been a key part of the city’s transportation network, connecting suburban passengers across many stations. With 750,000 daily riders, passenger health and safety is paramount. This requires managing and eliminating smoke, hot gases, and pollutants from train operations to reduce associated health risks.

In 2018, Maintenance Service Engineers identified the need to upgrade the ventilation system at the No.1 Rail Building at Newcastle’s critical regional interchange station.

Business Challenge & Considerations.

To execute this ventilation project efficiently, several key considerations were taken into account:

  • Removal of old fans.
  • Installation of new fans in the same positions as the old, noisy ones.
  • Weatherproof and low-noise solutions.
  • Swift installation to avoid disruptions in transportation operations.
  • The new fans had to remove heat, dust, and odours efficiently.

Fanquip Solution.

After evaluating the No.1 Rail Building, Fanquip recommended installing 5 Curb Base Hooded Roof Fans with matching upstands for the existing roof profile. These fans were chosen for their effectiveness in maintaining safe levels of engine emissions and ambient air temperature during train idling.

Four fans replaced the old, noisy units, while the fifth was installed in the shed’s new extended section.
